COVID-19 Korea : Current Situation of Quarantine Process

  • Those with a temporary visa (90-day visa or shorter) are required to reside in quarantine areas provided by the government.

  • Those with a long-term visa (longer than 90-day visas) are allowed to undergo the self-quarantine period in areas that fulfills the criteria set by the government. These areas can be found on Airbnb or provided by an associate.

  • Long-term visa holders can choose any house, apartment or office-tel that allows the holder to reside by themselves. The government requires any facilities (such as the restroom, kitchen, living room, etc) to be included privately in the chosen accommodation, and separated from the public.

  • Any long-term visa holders that have taken the same plane to South Korea can share the same house, apartment or office-tel. However, the rooms the group plan to sleep in must be separated. The government recommends such residents to have separated facilities, however if not possible it is advised to not utilize the facilities at the same time, and to disinfect both person and area after use. It is required to wear a mask whenever sharing facilities.

▶ Procedure at the airport

In the case of not having a high temperature when arriving at the In-Cheon International Airport terminal.

  • The immigration office will contact the accommodation (Airbnb) host, or Korean associate to check if they are aware of your arrival and quarantine stay. Completion of this check is required to pass immigration. (In this stage, you need a Korean number that can be usable for communicating local government office or airport)

  • Airport staff will inform you which terminal to head towards, and what public transportation to take to your destination. You must show them the address of your designated stay.

  • Take the recommended shuttle bus or special quarantine taxi to the local public health center, which should be located in the same area as your place of stay. (Airport shuttle bus: 16,000 KRW, specialized quarantine taxi: 65,000~100,000 KRW)

  • After the CO-VID examination at the health center (approx. 1-2 hours), the public health center will transport you to your temporary residence via bus or car.

  • The self-quarantine period is 14 days, starting from the day of arrival to South Korea. (e.g. Arrival on the 10th of any month -> end of quarantine at 12 PM on the 24th of same month)

If arriving at South Korea after opening hours of the local public health center.

  • It is possible to take the examination at certain ward offices that operate for 24 hours.

  • However, in most cases people only temporarily stop at the health center and go straight towards their temporary stay for quarantine. Such people are required to return to the health center within 2 to 3 days after arrival. It is advised to be examined the very next day after arrival.

  • The public health center advises people in self-quarantine to visit the health center on foot.

  • After examination, you must head back to your temporary residence and continue the quarantine period. Examination results can be checked via text message or email.

In the case of having a high temperature when arriving at the Incheon International Airport terminal.

  • You will receive a notice to immediately be examined at an isolated hospital located in the airport.

  • After arriving at the hospital, you will be checked for COVID-19.

  • After the examination, go through immigration (immigration process is the same as above, as if you did not have a high temperature)

  • You will be guided to the airport hotel and must reside there until the results are announced (takes approximately 6 to 10 hours). Food will be provided.

  • The results will be sent to your Korean phone number and email.

  • If tested negative, you will be transferred directly to your accommodation.

  • There will be no need for you to go to the public health center. The kit provided by the health center (plastic trash bags, thermometer) will be delivered the next day.

  • The quarantine period will begin on the day of arrival to South Korea, not when you arrive at your accommodation. (e.g. arrival on the 10th of any month (stay at airport hotel for 1 night) -> arrival to accommodation on the 11th -> end of quarantine at 12 PM on the 24th of same month)

Self-Quarantine Regulations

  • Guests will be required to report their body temperature and condition twice in one day using the official Self-Quarantine Safety Protection App. Please note that guests are required to report every day until the end of the self-quarantine period. If not reported on the app, the public health center will try to find you.

  • Once or twice each day, the public health center will contact you. (The public health center may instead try to contact the Korean associate, as it may be difficult to communicate in English.)

  • Randomly during each week, a worker from the public health center will visit your accommodation to check if your quarantine is going well. (Before they come to your place, the office will call you)

  • Garbage accumulated from your stay cannot be disposed of during the quarantine period and must be stored within the accommodation space. After your quarantine period ends, leave the garbage in front of the entrance door of the building. The public health center will come to collect the garbage. (Some areas require to throw the garbage in the specific areas, so you have to check and make sure with your office who is in charge before check out.)

Comparison of Your Choices for Quarantine Stay (Costs, etc)

  • Government-provided accommodation: 150,000 KRW ~ 200,000 KRW per day (incl. cost of food)

  • Two-week Airbnb accommodation: 600,000 KRW ~ 1,800,000 KRW for 14 days (not incl. cost of food)

  • Required acknowledgment and consent of stay by host. (Very difficult to attain as 90% of hosts reject quarantine-purposed stay and some Airbnbs are not qualified for the quarantine so you have to make sure with the requirements. – private bathroom and kitchen in the studio)

  • Direct communication with host necessary. (Also difficult as most hosts cannot communicate in English.)

  • Unless you have a Korean credit card, ordering food for delivery is difficult and usually not allowed as it requires payment in person.

  • Food delivery services usually do not communicate in English.

  • You require a Korean associate to help you with your quarantine.
